Episode 8: History, Social Studies, and AP Scores with Brad Gillespie

This week Brad Gillespie joins me from Houston, Texas to talk about the difference between history and social studies, the unique challenges of teaching both, and how he evaluates his students’ Advanced Placement scores.

Takeaways from this week’s episode: 1) In history and social studies classes, content and skills are closely intertwined. When a student struggles, it can be difficult to decipher if the gap is in content knowledge, or skill level. 2) The textbook is only one attempt at a narrative of history. 3) Even in high stakes situations, try to teach students that learning and growing is what’s important, not the number. 4) Teaching is something that is built over the course of many years. 5) Be willing to experiment, knowing you’re going to fail and willing to reflect and learn.
